They're as much a part of Thanksgiving dinner as pecan pie and Uncle Festus. But mashed potatoes are labor-intensive, and on Thanksgiving Day, that's not necessarily an asset. The wonderful thing about these mashed potatoes is, they can be made ahead of time, then warmed in the oven when you're ready. This has made a world of difference in my Thanksgiving Day sanity.

    Instructions

Steps to make Homemade Mashed Potatoes:

    1. Cut potatoes into 1-inch pieces & place in large pot. Peel garlic cloves & add to pot. Cover with water.
    2. Bring water to boil. Reduce heat to medium & cook for 15 minutes or until fork tender. Drain well & put in large bowl.
    3. While potatoes are cooking, put milk, butter, parsley, rosemary, & thyme in small saucepan over low heat. Cook & stir until milk is warmed & bitter is melted. Set aside.
    4. After potatoes are in large bowl, mash with potato masher until mashed.
    5. Add milk mixture, sour cream, salt, & cheese. Mix well. Can use a hand mixer if want. Then they are ready to serve.

Always put potatoes in cold water to start, then bring to a boil. That way the potatoes cook more evenly. Add cold water to the pan until the potatoes are covered by at least an inch. It's a cinch to jazz up instant mashed potatoes with sour cream and cream cheese, then cook and serve them from a slow cooker. For a special touch, sprinkle this creamy mashed potatoes recipe with chopped fresh chives, canned french-fried onions or fresh grated Parmesan cheese. โ€”Donna Bardocz, Howell, Michigan Our Favorite Creamy Mashed Potatoes Get This Recipe.
